48th Sakamoto Invitational Meet Held in Kihei

This year the 48th annual Sakamoto Invitational Meet was held in Kihei on May 25 and 26. The meet was moved to Kihei due to ongoing construction at the Coach Sakamoto Pool in Kahului, the meet’s usual venue. In addition to the expected swimming events, the meet included the invitational’s unique traditions such as the lighting of the memorial flame, which is swum across the pool before lighting a large brazier; an opening hula, performed on a raft that is swum across the pool; and the raucous, mixed-ages, rules-loosened Pineapple Relay.
